Interview with Chani Perera

Snippets on her thoughts on empathy in connecting with students, and breaking culture and tradition is Chani Perera Founder of Riot House, Strategic Advisor, BA Programme at the Academy of Design.

Key discoveries:

  • The enforcing of these 'cultural' and traditional values by their parents can almost turn aggressive.

  • Some aspects of culture and traditional values needs to be retained in a healthy and innovating manner.

  • Educators can be mediators between extremist cultural and traditional values and a healthy balance of values and inspirations.

Is it ethical for educators to go against parental advice? To what extend, and using what method should educators intervene?

Should it part of the curriculum? Should the conversation be personal?

Can this be repeated for every student with the expected outcome?
